Microsoft’s Next Operating System – Windows 7

Windows 7 is supposed to address most of Windows Vista’s shortcomings. From what I’ve seen, it looks like Windows 7 is going to be all the things that Windows Vista was supposed to be. I’ve got it installed on a few different systems now and I’m pleased with what I’m seeing.
1.) Windows 7 [...]

Critical Security Vulnerability in Internet Explorer….

A critical vulnerability in Windows Internet Explorer running under Windows XP (all versions) was discovered this week.
This vulnerability is already being actively exploited and used to enable a “drive by download” of malware onto unsuspecting PCs. A drive by download is basically where, when you visit an infected website, it can effectively install software [...]

Ranting about Palm Centro Versamail ActiveSync and SBS 2008

Warning: This is a technical rant…
I was recently configuring – or rather – trying to configure, a customer’s Palm Centro Smartphone to sync Outlook (Exchange) information with their shiny new SBS08 Server. I quickly realized that this can prove to be a lesson in futility…
The first thing to know is that, for whatever reason, the [...]

Windows 7 – A light at the end of the tunnel?

For many people, the transition from Windows XP to Windows Vista was a rough one. Others refused to make the move altogether either because of the negative publicity it received  or a software / hardware incompatibility of some kind.
Originally, it was planned that Windows codename "Blackcomb" (a.k.a Windows 7) was to be the successor [...]

The Twelve Fundamental networking Truths… (rfc1925)

Now I just love this. This RFC (Request for Comment) states the 12 fundamental networking truths. This stuff is hilarious in a "so-true" kind of way.

Takes a licken’, keeps on ticken’

Towards the end of the year we usually spend some time going through our various client’s systems’ checking and double-checking on things. I was doing some check-ups and found a Windows 2000 Server that had an uptime of 427 days!!! That is, the server has been online, without a reboot for this duration!
(Below is the [...]

What is Web 2.0???

You may have heard the term "Web 2.0" in the media recently. The term seems to suggest a new or updated version of the World Wide Web, however the term does not refer to any technical specifications at all.

As Tim O’Reiley suggests, it refers to changes in the ways people use the World [...]

Leaving fewer pieces behind…

Most people are at-least vaguely aware that when files are deleted from a computer, they still remain around for an indeterminate amount of time. Essentially what is happening is that when the file is deleted, a bit is marked on the disk telling the file system that the next piece of data that needs to [...]

Halloween scares – Disaster Recovery

I love Halloween, I always have.  Something about being scared – it could just be an excuse to watch startling teenage slasher-flicks late at night, but I digress…
Disaster Recovery is a topic that there are as many opinions on as there are ghouls on Halloween. There are so many products out there and so many [...]
